Rene J. Fontaine, Sr. – age 92, of South Grove Street, died September 5, 2011 at Maine Veterans Home after an extended illness. He was born in Augusta, Maine on November 1, 1918 the son of Joseph H. Fontaine and Josephine M. (Cloutier) Fontaine.
Mr. Fontaine served honorably in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during World War II.
He had been employed by the State of Maine from 1974 until 1980. He was previously employed by the Veterans Administration Center at Togus, Maine from 1944 until 1974.
Mr. Fontaine was a member of St. Michael Parish at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, a life member of the Calumet Club and Cushnoc Senior Citizens, and a member of Fitzgerald-Cummings American Legion Post #2.
He was predeceased by his parents, four brothers and two sisters.
Surviving is his wife of 64 years, Virginia (Beckim) Fontaine of Augusta; two daughters, Linda M. Landry and her children Jamie Fontaine and Crystal Landry, all of Augusta, and Jeannine T. Dumont of Augusta and her children Deane Beane of Hallowell and Danielle Jellison of Gardiner; two sons, David J. Fontaine of Augusta and his son Patrick Fontaine of Brunswick, and Rene J. Fontaine, Jr. of Monmouth and his children, Shawn Fontaine of Farmington, Rene J. Fontaine III of Wilton and Jeana Fontaine of Monmouth; seven great-grandchildren, two nephews and several cousins.
Visitation is scheduled from 9-11 AM Friday September 9th at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. Members of the Calumet Club will offer a prayer service for Mr. Fontaine at 10:45 AM Friday at the funeral home, followed by the funeral service at 11 AM. Burial will follow the funeral service at Mount Hope Cemetery, Augusta.
