Obituary for George Wesley Derry

George Wesley Derry, son of the late George and Susie Derry
(Hodges), was born on May 29, 1916 in Quaker Neck, Maryland. He was one of 16 children. He departed this life on Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at Chester River Hospital at the age of 96 after a brief illness. He was educated by the Kent County Public School System.
George was a member of the U. S. Army from October 1942 to
November 1945 and served in World War II.
He was married to the late Irene Bertha Derry (nee Cann) on June 25, 1941. They were married for 44 years.
George joined Emmanuel United Methodist Church at an early age and later re-dedicated his life to Christ at the age of 43. He was a devoted member who was always ready to lend a helping hand.
He worked for Mr. and Mrs. Richard Collins from the age of 15 until he was drafted into the Army. After he was honorably discharged, he returned to employment with the Collins and worked for them for 50 years. He was also employed by Washington College for 42 years. He worked for Judge Paul Bowman and was currently working for Mrs. Elaine Bowman.
George leaves to mourn one sister, Sarah Derry of Chestertown, MD; four daughters, Mrs. Rader Steward of Quaker Neck, MD; Mrs. Patricia Derry-Watts of Baltimore, MD; Ms. Priscilla Derry of Baltimore, MD and Mrs. Dorothy Sisco of Still Pond, MD.; three sons-in- law, Mr. Cleveland Steward, Mr. Bernard Watts and Mr. Troy Sisco; 11 grandchildren, Monica Jones Albarado, Galen Derry, DeShawn Sampson-Watts; Dionna Sampson-Watts, Troy Sisco, all of Baltimore, MD and Tayron Sisco of Still Pond, MD.; Coretta Williams of Worton, MD’ Sandra Burton of Vineland, NJ; Rosalind Bordley of Wilmington, DE; Harold Bordley of Greensboro, MD and Pandora Bordley of Quaker Neck, MD; granddaughter-in-law, Stephanie Derry of Baltimore, MD. He was preceded in death by three grandchildren, Kirsten Monique Sisco, Dennis Roshawn Sampson and Darrell Bordley. He is also survived by 20 great-grandchildren, 18 great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, great nieces, great nephews and a host of relatives and friends.
George was a devoted father, brother, grandfather and uncle. He enjoyed cooking, working, playing cards, and spending time with his family. He always stayed abreast of current events and was an avid watcher of CNN. He was a member of the American Legion Parker White Post for 51 years, a member of the NAACP and a member of "The Methodist Men of Emmanuel United Methodist Church. George especially enjoyed providing transportation for the community the most. He was full of wisdom, which he was always trying to share with his family and others.
