Dr. Richard Charles Manjoney, age 86, of West Haven, formerly of Orange, died October 20, 2012 at St. Vincent’s Medical Center. Dr. Manjoney, a Bridgeport native, was born in 1926 to the late Vincent and Mary (Riccio) Manjoney. His parents, both pharmacists, operated Manjoney’s Pharmacy on East Main Street in Bridgeport. He graduated from Milford Academy, attended Tufts University and matriculated from the University of Vermont with a B.S. in 1947, and Doctorate of Medicine in 1950.
Dr. Manjoney interned at St. Vincent’s Hospital specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology and married nurse Evelyn Petrucelli in 1953. He was called to active duty in the United States Air Force from 1953 until 1955 and served as Captain at Bolling Air Force Base Hospital, Washington D.C. After discharge, he completed training as Chief Resident at Duval Medical Center in Jacksonville, Florida. He returned to Connecticut and started a private practice in Bridgeport where he was later joined by his twin brother Dr. Robert Manjoney. Dr. Manjoney relocated to the Lower Naugatuck Valley in 1961 where he was on staff at Griffin Hospital until his retirement. He was Chief of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and served as President of the Medical Staff. He was also President of the Lower Naugatuck Valley Medical Society and Assistant Clinical Professor at Yale School of Medicine. He was a member of the American Medical Association, a Diplomat of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was a kind and compassionate physician, dearly loved by his patients. A memorable event during the height of his career was delivering the first New Year’s baby in the country.
Dr. Manjoney is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Evelyn; daughter Mary Chervenak and her husband Robert of Cheshire; son Richard, Jr. and his wife Rosanne of Andover MA; grandson Matthew Chervenak and twin granddaughters Jaime and Rachel Manjoney; brother Dr. Vincent Manjoney of Trumbull, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his twin brother Dr. Robert Manjoney.
After retirement, Dr. Manjoney taught himself how to play the keyboard and volunteered performing “sing-a-longs” at several nursing homes. He recalled fondly the best received melody being “God Bless America.” He acquired his first computer in 1989, mastered it and developed a basic computer curriculum, volunteering to teach at Derby Senior Center. SeniorNet of New Haven invited him to join their group as an instructor, which he was for 10 years. He also taught computer classes at the Hamden Senior Center, Cass Memorial Library in Orange, and at the Orange Senior Center. He took great satisfaction helping seniors learn computer basics in his class called “Computers Can Be Fun”. Dr. Manjoney enjoyed traveling with his wife to Europe, especially to Italy and the visits to their grandparents’ home towns and to his favorite city of Rome. He also enjoyed cruises to various locations. He was an avid reader and bridge player and through the years took great pleasure in playing golf and skiing in Vermont.
Dr. Manjoney will be greatly missed and forever remembered for his love of family and friends, devotion to his patients and students, keen wit and gentle nature.
