Obituary for Henry E. Erhard

Castine, ME - Henry Emile (Mike) Erhard, 89, died June 1, 2013. He was born October 11, 1923, in Newton, MA, to Henry Alker and Helen (Weber) Erhard.
Mike grew up in Boston and Wenham, MA and graduated from Noble and Greenough School in 1942 and Harvard University class of 1946. He served his country as a Captain and Pilot in the US Army Air Corps during WWII. Following the war, he studied language at Middlebury College and eventually became a School Master teaching French at Middlesex School in Concord, MA. In 1952, Mike married Sallie Hope Brown, of Salem, MA, and then lived happily ever after. After educating and supporting thousands of students for over 35 years, Mike and Sallie retired to Castine, ME where they continued to be very active in their community.
Mike lived his life making the most of every day, pursuing varied interests and dedicating years to guiding youth whether it be in the classroom, the dormitory, the ice rink or on the water. He rowed at Nobles and Harvard and coached crew at Middlesex School. When school schedules offered a break, Mike headed for the mountains of New England as an avid skier through his 84th year. During the summers, he built his retirement home by hand on the coast of Maine where he was often seen sailing around Penobscot Bay. He served as Commodore of the Castine Yacht Club, on the Bagaduce Ambulance Corps and the Castine Planning board. Mike was a devoted and active member of the Our Lady of Holy Hope by the sea Catholic Church.
His achievements growing up, at Middlesex, and in Castine will not be measured by trophies and numbers, but rather by the quiet, subtle way he influenced others and the joy shared by all who knew him.
He is survived by his four children, Hope McNally and her husband, John, of Hudson, Ohio, Lincoln and his wife, Kerrin (Cheever), of Boothbay, Henry and his wife, Laurie (Snow), of Castine and Paul and his wife Susan Tomases, of Hamilton, MA; eight grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. He is predeceased by his wife Sallie Hope.
A mass will be held 12 noon Saturday, June 15th at Our Lady of Holy Hope Catholic Church in Castine. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to At Home/Downeast, PO Box 1107, Blue Hill, ME 04614: 207-374-5852, http://www.whcacap.org/at-home-downeast/hancock/
