Louise's Legacy

About two years ago, after Louise's first radiation treatment and before the surgeries, my husband Ron and I drove from Wi. to visit Adrian and Louise, our friends for over 40 years. She wasn't sleeping well or sure she could be much company but allowed me to stay behind while our spouses toured guy places. When she got dressed she mentioned her trouble sleeping being a side effect of steroid meds.

I asked her what she did when she was awake much of the night. Her answer was that she used her IPad. In the dark of that night she had checked out the NASA site and learned there was a good chance to see falling stars in her part of the sky. So she watched and was rewarded by seeing a couple of vibrant falling stars.

I thought her answer was elegant. It took my breath away. But I didn't want to bog her down with my reaction and instead talked about a song we knew from long ago: Catch A Falling Star. We wound up sitting at her kitchen table and singing parts we could remember and laughing.

Yesterday I visited the formal flower gardens at a nearby park. The roses are a riot of color and scent. They're flanked by many other patches of mixed plantings with appealing raked paths. Small birds live in the trellises that frame the area. I figured Louise would be happy there. So I stood and sang our song with the birds for company.

with love to all the family,

Carolyn, Ron, Kenn Spitz
