Dear Carol: My deepest sympathies and best wishes go out to you now, with Norm's passing. He was a great grad school colleague; exhausting at times, but unfailingly good-spirited and intellectually challenging and stimulating. I'll never forget the way he showed me every chapter of the first SPSS handbook, as he and Tex and Jay created it, and asked my opinion. Finally I asked why he always came to me, since I had taken no math since high school. His answer: I know--but we figured that if you could understand it, anyone could. I think that was a compliment.
