Life Story for Ada Jean Atterberry

Ada Jean Atterberry
Ada Jean Wright Atterberry, passed peacefully from this life with her family at her bedside on May 31, 2015. She will be remembered for her grace, humility, and most of all for her strength.

Ada was the second generation of a pioneer family who homesteaded in the Honey Lake Valley near Susanville, California. She was born at home, attended a one-room school, became an accomplished horsewoman, and graduated from Lassen Union High School. She worked for Citizens Utilities in Susanville prior to her marriage and later, as well, having worked for 25 years. During the war she moved to Chico, California where she worked at the Chico Army Air Base. It was here that she met and married Jess Atterberry in 1944. They raised their family in the Napa Valley and later in Susanville. After they both retired they made their homes at Eagle Lake, California and Yuma, Arizona. As snow birds, mom said, “These were the golden years”. Having lost her eyesight she moved near her daughter in Hailey, Idaho for the remainder of her life.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jess; her brothers Paul, Tom, George; her sister Frances and a step grandchild Gary. She is survived by her children Linda (Pete) Van Der Meulen, Lois (Bob) Vial, and step daughter Donna Steinbring. In addition she will be missed by her grandchildren Stephanie, Robert, Christina, Dan, and Greg and 9 great grandchildren. She leaves step grandchildren David, Jan and June, 8 great grandchildren, and 11 great, great grandchildren. Ada also leaves her brother Ray of Susanville.

A private memorial service was held for her at the home of Linda and Pete in Hailey, Idaho on June 3. Her favorite charities were the Salvation Army and Veterans of Foreign Wars if anyone wishes to make a donation. In addition the guidance of Hospice of the Wood River Valley was very helpful during her last days and the nursing care at Bell Mt. Village and Care Center was invaluable and very appreciated.
