Valdine E. (Hopkins) Johnson, age 93, died on July 4, 2015 at The Home of the Good Shepherd, Moreau, NY. Valdine was born on a farm in Ballston Lake, NY on March 16, 1922 to Howard and Annah (Devereau) Hopkins. At age 10, her family moved to Wilmington, Deleware due to the foreclosure of the family farm during the Great Depression. After four difficult years they returned to Ballston Spa where she attended Ballston Spa High School. During World War II, she worked in the military parts department at at GE. She then had a long and successful career working as a secretary for the Ballston Spa Central School System. In retirement she worked as an assistant for a county judge and volunteered many hours leading the Christ Episcopal Church Food Pantry. Val was a lifelong member of Christ Episcopal which played a significant role in her life.
For almost 70 years, she lived in the home which she and her husband built by hand. Her great wit continued until her final days. She loved cats, particularly her beloved Casper.
Val is survived by her daughter Lori; her son Jeff and his wife Mary Kehoe, and her granddaughter, Whitney Johnson; her sister, Pat Bogue and her husband Bob Bogue; her niece Betsy Cull and her husband, Ron Cull and their four children; her nephew Aaron Bogue; and Jeff’s first wife Pat Knoerl. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Harold Johnson and her brother Carlton Hopkins.

The family wishes to thank the caregivers of The Home of the Good Shepherd Enhanced Assisted Living facility and members of Val’s hospice team for their kindness. The family also acknowledges the sage guidance provided to the family by Attorney John Cromie. An additional expression of gratitude is owed to Dr. Earl Zimmerman of Albany Medical Center. His early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease and effective interventions added much to the quality of Val’s life.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Saratoga County Animal Shelter, 6010 County Farm Road, Ballston Spa, NY 12020.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2015 at 7 PM at Christ Episcopal Church, 15 W. High St., Ballston Spa, NY. A reception will follow the service in the church hall.
