Mrs. Soby was a great teacher and an even better person. I graduated from Grosse Pointe North in 2004, and it's because of her I went into journalism. When I was in the 11th grade, I was in her journalism class. At the end of the year, she insisted I apply to be on the school's newspaper my senior year. I loved to write but always enjoyed creative writing over news reporting. I applied for a reporter position, and she made me a co-editor. She also many times helped me with college applications and life in general. After graduating from Central Michigan University in 2009, I started a career in journalism. I've worked for several news organizations since then, and I'm currently a reporter at The Detroit News. While I've had many teachers and mentors over the years, I will never forget Mrs. Soby. She was always there to help her students. We spoke a few years ago over the phone and I was was able to thank her for her help. She was truly a great woman who will be missed by many. My sincere condolences to her family and friends.
