Obituary of Jere K. Dunkleberger
Jere K. Dunkleberger, 85, of Hummelstown, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 29, 2016, with his family by his side.
Born in Harrisburg on November 20, 1930, he was the son of the late Jeremiah C. and Louise Kiner Dunkleberger.
Jere was a longtime resident and business owner in Hummelstown; operating Jere K. Dunkleberger Hearing Aids for over 55 years. He was a 1949 graduate of John Harris High School, Harrisburg, where he met his high school sweetheart and future wife, Pearl. To this day, he was still John Harris and Pioneer proud. Jere was a member of the United Church of Christ, Hummelstown. He had also been a longtime member and youth Sunday school teacher at Derry Street United Methodist Church, Harrisburg. Jere served with the Army National Guard. He was a 50 year member of the Perseverance Lodge #21, F&AM, Harrisburg, and a member of the Harrisburg Consistory, Tall Cedars Forest #43, and the Zembo Shrine. Jere was also a member of the Hummelstown Optimist Club; he was a giver to his community, family and friends. He had a passion for life and enjoyed many hobbies from boats to cars to small airplanes, and to Jere golf was the best sport of all. He was a bright man who enjoyed being hands-on in all aspects of life, loved politics and patriotism. Jere was a gift giver at heart; he would often do special things that sometimes went unrecognized, but he truly loved and appreciated his family and friends.
Jere leaves behind his beloved bride of nearly 64 years, Pearl L. Warren Dunkleberger, whom he married on June 7, 1952; his son, Jere W. Dunkleberger of Hershey; his two daughters, Kim L. Drawbaugh wife of Frank M., Jr. of Harrisburg and Lynn A. Gomer wife of David I. of Hummelstown; his sister, Joyce Reohr of Carlisle; his two grandchildren, Zoe N. Gomer and Dylan H. Gomer; his brother and sister in laws, nieces and nephews; and the many others whose lives he touched with his caring ways and great sense of humor.
He was preceded in death by his sister, June Aldinger; and his brother, Robert Dunkleberger.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2016, at 11:30 AM in the Hummelstown United Church of Christ, 104 East Main Street, with The Rev. Dr. Priscilla L. Denham and The Rev. Dr. Claude I. Dencler, officiating. Interment with military honors will be in the Hummelstown Cemetery. A Masonic service will be held on Saturday at 9:30 AM in the church, with a viewing immediately to follow from 10 AM until time of the service.
