Obituary for Loma Jean House (Ray)
WATERBURY – Loma Jean House age 91, passed away peacefully at the Lutheran Home of Southbury after a brief illness surrounded by the love and comfort of her family on Monday, January 16 2017. She was the widow of George House.
Loma was born on March 8, 1925 in Fletcher, KY and spent her early years tending a small farm in rural Kentucky with her mother, Pearl Ray. Her father, James Tevis Ray, died in a coal mining accident when she was 3 years old. She married George House on November 13, 1943 in Fayetteville, NC, shortly before he shipped out for active military duty during World War II. Loma Jean worked for a time in the original Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in London, KY. More importantly, Loma Jean took part in the Manhattan Project for the atomic bomb, as part of the workforce in Oak Ridge, TN during World War II. She received an Official Citation for her contribution to that effort. In 1969, Loma Jean and her husband George, relocated to Hampton, VA where he worked at the Newport News Shipyard and she worked as a waitress. In 1995, she moved to Waterbury, CT to be closer to her daughter.
Among her survivors are her daughter, Marilyn St George and her husband, Roger of Waterbury, CT, her grandchildren, Benjamin St. George, Jennifer Hale and her husband, William Hale III, and Kathryn St. George and her great-grandson, Maximillian St. George as well as other extended family members.
A Memorial Service for Mrs. House will be held on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at 6:00pm at Casey’s Eastside Memorial, 1987 East Main St @ Southmayd Rd., Waterbury. Burial will be held privately and at the convenience of the family. Relatives and friends may visit with Loma’s family at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 4:00 ~ 6:00 PM.
