Donald Gene Mayer, resident of Broomfield, passed away surrounded by family love on January 31, 2017. Born November 9, 1930 in Chicago to William and Veta Mayer, he was preceded in death by his parents and only brother. He is survived by his five children Carol, Patricia, Steven, Mary Ann, Teresa and ten grandchildren. He served his country for over 21 years in the Navy and Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. After his military service he became a Criminal Investigator for the US Government. He was a world class runner and distance cyclist and won many athletic awards. He was a devout Catholic and member of the Knights of Columbus. He served as a Past Grand Knight, State Chairman and was awarded Knight of the Year. He was a member of the 4th Degree Assembly 1047357, Broomfield, CO. All Don’s life he enjoyed painting and often would give away his creations. Don was on the board of Care Net and believed deeply in the sanctity of all life, especially the unborn. He was married to the love of his life Loretta Marie Mayer for 61 years. The family is especially grateful to all the Sunrise workers and TRU Community Care Hospice workers for their care and support. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions in Don’s name be made to Saint Jude’s Research, TRU Community Care Hospice or Care Net Pregnancy of Cochise County. A Rosary and Mass will take place at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church in Broomfield, CO on Monday, February 6, 2017 with the Rosary starting at 9:15am and Mass at 10:00am.
