Obituary for Roy E. Barnes

Roy E. Barnes, age 86, of Toledo, Ohio passed away Monday February 6, 2017 in Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Toledo Campus. He served his country in the U. S. Marine Corps and saw combat in the Korean War. He graduated with several degrees from the University of Toledo and was a faculty member of the university for over 35 years as an associate professor in Carlson Library. Following his retirement, he was very active in the community including volunteering at Toledo Hospital for more than twenty years, at his church and also with the Korean War Veterans Association. Roy and Shirley were enthusiastic and loyal supporters of the UT football team and men’s and women’s basketball teams having held season tickets for more than 50 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley in April 2015 and siblings Richard Barnes, Robert Barnes and Pauline Johnston. Roy is survived by his sons, Paul (Diane) Barnes, Waterville, Ohio, Carl (Julie) Barnes, Toledo, Ohio, siblings Dale Barnes, Esther Finney, Marvin Barnes, grandchildren, Kelly (Maggie) Barnes, David Barnes, Jodie Barnes, Steven Barnes and great grandchild Laney Barnes.

The family will receive friends at Glenwood Lutheran Church 2545 Monroe St. Saturday February 18, 2017 after 10:00 a.m. where services will be held at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Kathleen Schuck officiating. A private interment will take place at a later date in Mansfield Memorial Park, Mansfield, Ohio. Roy was very active in veterans groups and the family suggests memorials to the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky, Ohio. The family would also like to thank the physicians, nurses and staff at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Toledo Campus for the excellent care provided in his last several weeks.
