Funeral service for Donald E. Ayers, 59, of Portales, will be held at 10:00 A.M., Thurs., Mar. 9, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church in Portales with Dr. Keith Wilks officiating. Burial will be in the Portales Cemetery.
Donald Edward Ayers, known to family and friends as "Don," was born Sept. 21, 1957 in Roswell, NM to the home of Mary Jo (Battles) and Robert Joe Ayers, and died Mar. 2, 2017 at his home in Portales. The family moved to Portales in 1963, and he graduated from Portales High School in 1976. Soon after that, he began selling cars. In 1987, he moved to Amarillo, and later to Oklahoma City. During that period of time, he was working for a large carpet firm. In 1992, Don returned to Portales to make his home. He worked for several years for Hamilton Motors, first in Portales and later in Clovis. After leaving Hamilton's, Don was employed by several other car dealerships. For the past several years he had been on disability. Don enjoyed doing woodworking projects, as well as various other crafts, such as making denim purses out of old blue jeans.
He is survived by his mother, Mary Ayers of Portales; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Cindy Ayers of Fort Worth, TX and Randy and Barbara Ayers of Houston, TX; a sister and brother-in-law, Lisa and Jerry Ferguson of Portales; and three sons, Joshua Ayers of Las Vegas, NV, Jordan Ayers of Austin, TX and Jared Ayers of Nashville, TN. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Ayers.
