Obituary for Courtney Rayburn Bossert
Courtney Rayburn Bossert passed away after a short illness with his wife Karen Wallander Bossert and his daughter Shelby Peralta at his side. Courtney was born on August 29, 1954 in Bismarck, ND and is preceded in death by his parents Eunice Skjefte Bossert and Rayburn Bossert and his sister Deborah Ellen Ross.
Courtney is survived by his spouse Karen Wallander Bossert, daughter Shelby Peralta, son-in-law Bryan Peralta and numerous extended family.
Courtney grew up in Phoenix and started college at Glendale Community College in Arizona where he was an All American Offensive Center.
He then transferred to University of Nevada, Las Vegas where he was an Offensive Center for the UNLV Rebel Football Team during the 1974 (Hall of Fame Team), 1975 & 1976 seasons. UNLV was important to Courtney for more than football; he met his future wife Karen there in the dormitory in which they lived. After a short stay in Phoenix after graduation, Courtney moved to Reno to begin his teaching and football coaching career with Washoe County School District where he worked until his retirement.
In his 28 year career, Courtney considered himself an Educator first and foremost. He started his teaching career at O’Brien Middle School where he made life-long friends. Throughout his career in WCSD, he also taught at McQueen and Reed High Schools. Secondly, he was a coach of various sports with coaching football most important to him.
As head football coach at Reed HS, he had numerous winning seasons and took great pride in the successes of his athletes.
He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, time with his dog in the back- yard, camping, fishing, shooting, photography, surfing in his younger years, Giants baseball, spring baseball in Arizona, learning to play guitar, and trips to Hawaii. Most importantly he loved his girls Karen and Shelby.
Found in Courtney’s planner was a prayer important to him “Dear Lord, It’s hard to endure times of illness and suffering. Comfort me and help me to trust You.”
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
