Mrs. Porter, born on October 5, 1911, passed away in Miami, Fl, on Wednesday, March 15, 2017. She was born to Willie and Pearl Kelker. She received early education in Milton and graduated from Washington High School in in 1933. She attended Freedman's Hospital School of Nursing in Washington D.C., became a Registered Nurse in 1935, a Public Health Nurse in 1937, and was appointed Supervisor of Nurses at the Florida A&M College Hospital in Tallahassee. She was the Health Instructor, School Nurse, and worked in several capacities for the College's Lucy Moton High School for 28 years. She earned her B.S. degree in Sociology from Florida A&M University and her Masters in Medical and Surgical Nursing at Indiana University. She later joined the Mount Sinai Hospital as the first Afro -American instructor in the School of Practical Nursing. In 1939, Miss Willie Pearl married Dr. Gilbert Lawrence Porter, who preceded her in death. She leaves to cherish her memories two loving and devoted children, Laurestine Porter and Albert Porter (Yuenes) both; one sister, Audrey O. K. Davis; grandchildren, Crystal Porter-Bazemore (Tawan), Braylon Pope; cousins, Louise and Harold Kelker, a host of nieces, nephews and devoted friends. Funeral services will be held at noon on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at Isaiah Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Milton, Fl., with presiding Elder Anthony R. Scott officiating. Interment will follow at Milton Keyser Cemetery. Trahan Family Funeral Home of Milton is in charge of arrangements.
