Obituary for John "Red" McDonough Sr.

John "Red"  McDonough Sr.
John (Red) McDonough Sr., 86, of West Haven passed away peacefully on April 2, 2017. He was born in New Haven, a son of the late Francis and Ruth McDonough. Red was best known as the head high school hockey coach at Wilbur Cross High School in New Haven from 1957 to his retirement in 1994. He also was a teacher and taught history at Cross. Prior to his teaching and coaching career, Red played professional hockey for the New Haven Blades in the mid 1950’s and at the same time was drafted by the New York Rangers and attended their training camp. In the 1970’s he served as President of the Connecticut Chapter of the National Ice Hockey Officials Association and rose to the rank of President of the National Ice Hockey Officials Association. He also served on the West Haven City Council. In the year 2000 he received the Connecticut Nutmeg State Sports Living Legend Award and in 2007 he was elected into the Wilbur Cross High School Hall of Fame. Red leaves behind his wife Irene, son John Jr. of New Haven, a daughter Karen of West Haven and his cherished grandson Ryan Patrick McDonough. He was predeceased by his brother Francis J. McDonough (NHFD). The family wishes to thank Mariner’s Point Harbor Unit of East Haven, Dr. Lazarides and his staff at the West Haven Medical Group, Amity office, Constellation Health for all the care and support they have given to Red and his family and special thanks to the outpouring of support given by the Connecticut Hockey community.
The hours for visitation will take place on Wednesday from 4 to 8pm at the West Haven Funeral Home at the Green. On Thursday morning, all are asked to proceed directly to the Church of St. Louis for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 o’clock. Interment will follow in Mt. St. Peter’s Cemetery, Derby. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimers Association, 200 Executive Blvd.,Suite 4B, Southington, CT. 06489-1058
