Obituary for Anna L. Shiffert

Anna L.  Shiffert
Anna L. Shiffert, 90, of Orwigsburg, passed away April 4, 2017, in Manor Care Sinking Spring.

Born November 4, 1926, in Harrisburg, she was one of the twin daughters of the late Francis and Marion (Davis) Bailey.

Anna and her twin sister graduated at 16 from Schuylkill Haven High School in 1943.

Her first job was as an office clerk in Alpha Mills Schuylkill Haven. While her children were young, Anna devoted her time and talents to sewing, baking wedding cakes, crocheting, and raising her children. Later as the children got older, she went back to work at Kepner Scott Shoe Company in the office and ultimately as the Borough of Orwigsburg municipal secretary where she would spend 20 years doing the bookkeeping and office work.

She was the first certified municipal clerk in Schuylkill County, completing three years of course work at Shippensburg University. Her working life ended at Ehrlich in Pottsville in 1991.

Anna was a life member of the Orwigsburg Chapter No. 424 Order of the Eastern Star, the past treasurer of Orwigsburg Senior Citizens where she devoted much time to organizing and running bus trips to dinner theaters, plays, and vacations spots. Anna served as President of the Blue Mountain PTA, was a Girl Scout leader for many years, and was a member of the Pennsylvania Association of Notaries as a Notary. Bowling in a league in Pottsville was a passion of Anna's for many years.

She belonged to St. Paul's Lutheran Church and had all of her children baptized and educated in the church.

Anna loved to travel, play cards, do crosswords, read libraries full of books, and generally beat everyone at board games.

She was predeceased by her siblings, brother Robert Bailey, twin sister Jeanne Kelly, and brother James Bailey.

Anna is survived by four children, Donna L. Sawyer of South Carolina, Sandra J. Hain of West Reading, Rawn D. Shiffert of Homosassa, Florida, and Anne M. (Shiffert) Rutkowski, wife of Frank Rutkowski, Wyomissing.

There are six grandchildren, Jennifer Harvey, Michelle Hain, Jeffrey Hain, Rebecca Shtofman, David Rutkowski and Mark Rutkowski.

Anna also had five lovely great-grandchildren, Tabitha, Julianna, Max, Zoe and Lucy.

Kathleen Allen of Harrisburg is a surviving niece.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 156, Orwigsburg, PA 17961. The Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home Inc., 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
