Obituary for George W. Shemwell

George W.  Shemwell
George W. Shemwell, Sr., 85, went home on April 8, 2017. He was born on January 23, 1932 in Memphis, TN to the late Homer and Elsie Shemwell. Mr. Shemwell retired from East Texas Motor Freight and previously from Memphis Cotton Carnival. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church where he was also a communicant. Mr. Shemwell also proudly served in the US Army. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Gillespie Shemwell; daughter, Teresa Jenne’; son, George W. Shemwell, Jr.; grandson, Garrett Graves; brothers, Homer and Tommy Shemwell; sister, Ginger Shemwell. Mr. Shemwell is survived by children, Michael Shemwell (Sharon), Deborah Shemwell (Sam Purdy), Robert Shemwell (Pam), Libby Graves, Jimmy Shemwell (Penny); son-in-law, Butch Jenne’ (Cindy); daughter-in-law, Yonna Terry (David); fifteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Visitation will be 5:00-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 11 and funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 12 at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. Interment will be in Forest Hill East Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Wounded Warrior Project.
