Obituary for Philip R. "Phil" Spies

Philip R. "Phil" Spies, 76, formerly of Jacobus, died Monday, April 17, 2017 at his home in York. He was the husband of Darlene F. (Walker) Spies with whom he had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past September 3rd.

A memorial service is scheduled for Sunday, April 23, at 2 p.m. from the Shrewsbury Assembly of God, 234 N. Main St., Shrewsbury, with Pastor Jason Tourville and Pastor Howard Edmondson officiating. A flag folding ritual will be offered by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. A time of fellowship will follow in the church lobby. The J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc. of New Freedom is assisting the family.

Phil was born, July 31, 1940, in Hanover, York County, a son of the late Alvine K. and Mary Jane (Messersmith) Spies. He was a veteran with the U.S. Army during peacetime. Phil had retired in 1995 following 37 years employment as a quality engineer with the former AMP, Inc. He was a 42 year member with the Glen Rock Carolers and a member of the Shrewsbury Assembly of God.

In addition to his wife, Phil is survived by two daughters, Devon O. Spies of Jasper, GA and Shannon M. Shaffer and her husband, Erik of York; and a son, Chad M. Spies of Red Lion; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Beverly Seitz of York; and a brother, Danny Spies.
