Obituary for Barbara Coats

Barbara H. Coats
Of Bethany Courtyards, and formerly of Montour Falls and Mecklenburg, passed away on her 96th birthday, April 19, 2017. She is survived by her loving sons, Frederick (Laurie) Heimes of Evergreen, CO, and Peter (Liz) Coats of Mecklenburg, NY; two grandchildren, Shane Coats (fiancée Holly Keith) and Lauren Coats; loving nieces and nephews; and beloved close friend, Ed Riley. She was predeceased by loving husbands, Frederick J. Heimes, Sr and Warren L Coats, her parents, Herbert C. and Sylvia E. Adams; and sisters, Virginia Barone. Ellen Angstrom, and Alice Train. Barbara graduated from Odessa High School in 1939. She was a student at Cornell University until her marriage to Frederick J Heimes Sr. (KIA WWII, 1945) in 1942. Barbara was married to Warren Coats for 63 years until his death in 2011. Barbara worked as a cashier at Cayuga Medical Center from 1970-1983. Prior, she and Warren owned and operated the Mecklenburg Grocery Store for several years. She was a member of the American Legion Post #676 Auxiliary of Odessa, Mecklenburg Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Mecklenburg United Methodist Church and sang in the choir. Barbara was an avid reader and card player; and an excellent cook and hostess. She was also a talented crafter, and for many years, with her good friend Margret Tabor, created numerous early American style treasures, many of which were donated for local fundraisers. The family will receive friends and relatives at the Royce-Chedzoy Funeral Home, 212 E. 4th St., Watkins Glen, on Friday, June 9, 2017, from 5-7pm. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, June 10, 2017 at 11:00am at the Mecklenburg United Methodist Church, 6063Turnkpike Rd., Mecklenburg. A reception and will follow at the Mecklenburg Fire Company. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Mecklenburg United Methodist Church, PO Box 66, Mecklenburg, NY 14863; or the Mecklenburg Volunteer Fire Company, PO Box 108, Mecklenburg, NY
