Ms. Charlene Steele, 58, of 540 Woodlawn Drive, Statesville, passed away at her home on Wednesday, May 2, 2017, unexpectedly. She was born in Iredell County on July 21, 1958 and was the daughter of Charles Steele and the late Rosialyn Redmon Steele. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her grandfather, John Henry Redmon; a great grandbaby, Suralya D. Beverly; one brother, Johnathan Dewayne Steele and one sister, Cathy Diane Steele.
She attended North Iredell High School and was a member of New Life Missionary Baptist Church in Troutman where she formerly served on the Usher Board. Tanker, as she was affectionately called, was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend. She drove a taxi for Adams Taxi for many years and really enjoyed driving her cab and meeting people. She had a love for everyone and would always leave you with these words... "I Love You."
She leaves to remember the blessing of her life, in addition to her father, Charles Steele of Harmony; two sons, Anthony Porter (Angie Baxter) of Catawba and Derrick Murdock of Statesville; two daughters, Monica Porter and Tasheena Porter, both of Statesville; three brothers, Charles Steele, Jr. and Joe Allen Williams, both of Statesville and John Wayne Steele of Harmony; two sisters, Priscilla Gay (Billy) Holmes and Zora (Oscar) Tucker, both of Harmony; eight grandchildren, Randesha Porter, Tytiana Alexander, Breanna Porter, Sha'kira Porter, Zion Sifford, Derrick Murdock, Jr., Sarah Murdock and Shareef Beverley; three great grandchildren, Serenity Johnson, Savion Ross and Samiya Beverly; a host of aunts and uncles including, Clarese Redmon of New York, Ruby Lucas of Washington, DC, Martha Allison of Statesville, Barbara James, Leroy (Janet) Steele, Dallas (Irene) Steele, Jimmy (Elaine) Steele and Clarence Steele, all of Harmony; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, Adam's Taxi Family, and special friends, Beverly Howell, Charles "NuNu" Sharpe, Botsie Blackwell, Roy Lee Adams, Toni Watts and many friends.
Celebration of Life Services will be conducted Saturday, May 6, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. at The New Life Missionary Baptist Church in Troutman. Rev. Ivan Cowan, Pastor, will officiate. Ms. Steele will remain at Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home until taken to the church to lie in state at 12:30 p.m. Members of the family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., but will assemble at the residence at other times.
