Betty J. Brass, 84, formerly of Bridgeport, died Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at Heritage Estates in Gering. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, May 15, 2017 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bridgeport with Pastor Allen Strawn officiating. Interment will follow at Oregon Trail Memorial Cemetery in Bridgeport. Viewing will be held one hour prior to service time at the church on Monday. The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made in care of the family and will be designated at a later date.

Betty was born August 28, 1932 in Burwell, Nebraska to Don and Mary (Pokorny) Cain. She graduated from Burwell High School in 1950. Betty went on to receive her teaching certification and taught in rural schools.

Betty married Verne Brass on January 1, 1954 in Burwell and to this union three children were born: Gene, Jeanine and Peggy.

Betty dedicated her life to being a homemaker and serving her family’s needs. Her home and her family were always her primary focus. Betty was straight forward, but loving, especially to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a long time member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her children, Gene Brass of Scottsbluff, Jeanine (John) Chikos of Baton Rouge, LA and Peggy Brass and special friend, Dennis Tyser of Lincoln; grandchildren, Adam (Krisa Shelly) Brass of Gering, Jennifer (Brad) Adams of Chicago, IL, Jayme Chikos of Burlington, NC, Julie Chikos of Mandeville, LA, Tonja (Chad) Mitchell of Arvada, CO and Robyn (Chad) Jensen of Alliance; great grandchildren, Duncan Adams, Tayden and Owen Mitchell, Paige and Hunter Jensen and one great granddaughter due in August; brothers, Don (Mary Lou) Cain of Burwell and Paul (Velma) Cain of Burwell; and numerous other extended family members and friends.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Verne; sisters, RoseMarie VanSlyke and Vonnie Cain; sister-in-law Jeanne Cain; brother-in-law Vernon VanSlyke; infant brother John Corwin Cain; and numerous other loving family members.
