Obituary for D. Marie Kendig (Mohn)

D. Marie Kendig (Mohn)
D. Marie Kendig, 87, a resident of the Orrstown Personal Care Home, formerly of Newburg, departed this life on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 16, 2017.

She was born on August 11, 1929, in Mowersville, the daughter of the late Bryan and Mary Coleman Mohn. Marie was a 1947 graduate of Shippensburg High School and married Merrill S. Kendig on March 25, 1948 in the former Newburg E.U.B. Church. He preceded her in death on October 31, 2002.

Marie was a long-time employee of the Shippensburg Area School District, holding many positions throughout the years. She was a very active, life-long member of the Newburg United Methodist Church; a member of the former Dessie Pricilla Rebekah Lodge #562, Newburg; and a member of the Newburg Board of Elections for many years. A position that she was always very proud of.

Marie was always very well known around Newburg for her skill in the kitchen. Her baking, especially pies, was especially sought after and looked forward to by many a Newburger. Almost all of the ingredients that she used came from her family’s large garden that she also preserved to feed the family through the winter months.

Marie was a very hard worker with a strong work ethic that she passed on to her daughters. Though, when she had some free time, you could find her playing cards; pinochle, 500 rummy, or bridge. She enjoyed traveling. Trips to Myrtle Beach and a family trip to Hawaii was a long awaited destination and a fond memory. And after her retirement, Marie would always help look after her grandchildren.

She is survived by her three daughters, Victoria A. (widow of the Honorable William) Kaye of Chambersburg, Susan K. (Jeffrey) Franklin of Charleston, SC, and Diane K. (George) Pharo of Shippensburg; four grandchildren, Scott K. (Laura) Stolte of Henderson, NV, David M. (Jennifer) Kaye of Lansdale, Alexander “A.J.” Franklin of Charleston, SC, and Julie S. (David) Pharo-Reichenbach of Liverpool; three great grandchildren, Daniel Stolte, Katherine Stolte, and Ryan William Kaye; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Marie was preceded in death by three brothers, harry, Marlin, and George Mohn.

Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, May 20, 2017, at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc., Shippensburg. Rev. Steve Salisbury and Rev. Paul Hauk will officiate. Interment will follow in the Spring Hill Cemetery. Viewing will be one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Orrstown Personal Care Home or the Newburg United Methodist Church.
