Louise Marie (Memoe) Peters, 86, died May 18, 2017 at her home in New Britain, CT after a year-long illness. Louise was born on September 4, 1930 at the family farmhouse in Leicester, Vermont. She was the oldest of four children of Martin and Eva (Benjamin) Memoe. Louise graduated from Brandon High School in 1949. Afterward, she moved to Yonkers, N.Y. to attend nursing school at St. Joseph's Hospital. Upon graduation Louise moved to New Britain to take a nursing position at Memorial Hospital, now known as the Hospital for Special Care, while living at the YWCA. She met and began dating Donald Peters. They married in October 1956. While most of Louise's career was spent at Memorial Hospital, she was also a nurse at Mediplex of Newington, Monsignor Bojanowski Manor in New Britain, and the Jerome Home in New Britain before retiring in 1994. In retirement, she would also work occasionally giving flu shots at local clinics. Louise held a deep affinity for her home state of Vermont and enjoyed taking her family to visit her mother and uncle, who remained living on the family farm. She was very proud when the street on which the family farm was located was renamed Memoe Road in the late 1980s. Louise was a founding member of St. Jerome Church in New Britain and a longtime volunteer at the church's former thrift store, The 980 House. She loved art and took drawing and watercolor classes through the New Britain Senior Center. Louise also enjoyed writing letters to family and gardening. She had a particular love for sunflowers. Above all, she enjoyed helping others, often her neighbors on Wood Road, and spending time with her family and friends. For the past ten years, her beloved shitzu, Benji, helped to keep her active.

In addition to her husband Donald, she leaves three children, Catherine Paldino and her husband William of Peachtree City, GA; Michael Peters and his wife Susan of Plainville, CT and Laurie Wasik and her husband Thomas of Florida; her beloved grandchildren, Stephanie (Peters) Romeo and her husband Charles of Rutland, VT, Steven Peters and his partner Lyz Tomsuden of Rutland, VT, and Frank Paldino and his partner Ranya Hussein of Peachtree City, GA; and a great-grandson, William Romeo, of Rutland, VT, who shares his great-grandmother's distinction of being a native Vermonter. She is also survived by a brother-in-law, George Haddad of Waterbury, a brother- and sister-in-law, Robert and Patricia Peters of Berlin, CT and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Louise was predeceased by her sister Claire Birdsall, two brothers, Martin "Ben" Memoe and Paul Memoe, and her in-laws George and Christine Peters. Louise’s family would like to express its deepest gratitude to Beth DeMaria for the loving care she provided Louise during her illness.

Funeral rites for Louise will be held Monday, May 22, 2017 at 8:30 a.m. with the procession departing at 9 a.m. from the Paul A. Shaker Funeral Home, 764 Farmington Ave., New Britain, CT followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Jerome Church, 1010 Slater Rd., New Britain, CT. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Brandon, VT., Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. Relatives and friends may call at the Paul A. Shaker Funeral Home, Sunday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Directions to funeral home – I-84 east or w est, exit 37 (Fienemann Rd), right off exit – one mile down on right.
