Florence Jean (Pye) Whirty passed away on Dec. 12, 2016, in Millinocket at the age of 90. She is predeceased by her husband, Bryant Whirty; her sister, Olivia Pye; and her parents, Edward Pye and Emily Jane (Coish) Pye. Jean, as she was known, is survived by her sons, Edward (Pat) Whirty of Atlantic Beach, N.C., and Robert Whirty of Millinocket; grandchildren Ryan Whirty of New Orleans; Kelly (Tom) Flanagan of Greensboro, N.C.; and Nathan Whirty of Portland, Ore. Also surviving are her three beloved great grandchildren Patrick, Ashling and Cian Flanagan. Jean was born in 1926 in Ford City, Pa. She and her family later moved to Queens, N.Y., and Jean spent much of her childhood in Newfoundland, where her family was rooted. As a member of the USO during World War II in New York, she met Bryant Whirty, then serving in the United States Navy, and married him in 1944. A devoted wife and mother, Jean lived with her family in Hicksville, N.Y., where she was employed at the W.T. Grant store in Plainview, N.Y. Jean was also a bowling enthusiast and worked at a local bowling alley while in Hicksville. Upon Bryant’s retirement from Consolidated Edison, they moved to Millinocket in the early 1990’s, where she was involved in local bingo groups and continued to pursue her love of bowling. Jean was also a lifelong member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. Jean’s memory will be honored Monday, June 5, at 1:30 at the family plot in the Millinocket Cemetery. A reception will follow the service at the family home at 105 Minuteman Drive, in Millinocket. Arrangements by Lamson Funeral Home in Millinocket.
