Obituary for Matthew C Benvenuti

NORTH BROOKFIELD- Matthew C Benvenuti, 94, passed away on July 9, 2017 in Quaboag Rehabilitation and Skilled Care Center in West Brookfield.

Matt was born in Southbridge on May 15, 1923 to the late Matthew and Agnes Benvenuti and moved to North Brookfield in 1930. His wife, Irene G (Kelley) Benvenuti, died in 2004. He is survived by his children Matthew G Benvenuti & his wife Rosemary of North Brookfield and Jean L Murphy & her husband Timothy of Easley SC; 5 grandchildren Monica E Wellman & her husband James, Matthew G Benvenuti Jr, Nicholas J Benvenuti, Rebecca Jarrell & her husband Corey and Tabatha Baker & her husband Chase; 3 great grandchildren Rose, Tegan and Chloe. He was predeceased by his 4 brothers Ernest, William, Emo, and Henry and a sister Pia Largess.

Matt graduated from North Brookfield High School, class of 1940. He was a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps during World War II serving in the Pacific on Siapan, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. He also served in the Korean War.

Matt was co-owner of the North Brookfield Fruit Store, a local family fruit and vegetable store, until 1963 when he entered the U S Postal Service. He was a letter carrier and a clerk in North Brookfield for many years retiring in 1987. During his postal career he also served for a time as Postmaster of New Braintree. Over the years Matt served on the North Brookfield Planning Board, Finance Committee, Board of Registrars and was a Corporator of the North Brookfield Savings Bank. He was a life member of the VFW, American Legion, and the Marine Corps League; a member of the Cardinal Gibbons Council Knights of Columbus and St Joseph's Church where he was an usher for many years.

Friends and family are invited to attend calling hours on Wednesday, July 12,2017 from 5-7PM in Pillsbury Funeral Home 44 Gilbert St. N.Brookfield. The funeral will be held on Thursday with a Mass at 10:00AM in St.Josephs Church 296 N.Main St.. Burial will follow with full Military Honors in the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Marine Corps League 1094, P O Box 336, Southbridge MA 01550.
