Obituary for Doris Louise Popp (Frerichs)

Doris Louise Popp, 95, of Colby, died Tuesday, July 18, 2017, at Prairie Senior Living Complex, Colby. She was born August 25, 1921, in Culbertson, NE, to William and Mabel (Christensen) Frerichs. She was one of 17 children, 10 boys and 7 girls. She was baptized and then later confirmed in 1935.

Doris attended the Culbertson Country School, until the eighth grade, when she was needed to help out at home during the depression. She then moved to Imperial, NE, where she lived with a family, helping with cooking, cleaning and caring for their children and also working at the Imperial Hotel. While living in Imperial she met Gordon Popp and they were married September 25, 1943, at the Zion Lutheran Church, by Pastor Schulenberg.

In 1943 Gordon was drafted into the Army. While he was in the service, Doris worked in Denver at the Remington Arms Defense Plant until it closed and then at the Naval Ammunition Plant in Hasting, NE, until the war ended and Gordon returned home. The couple made their home in Imperial, where their five children were born. There Doris served on the Alter Guild and was a member of the Ladies Aide. In 1960 they made the move to St. Francis, KS and later moved to Ellis. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Ellis and later Trinity Lutheran Church in Colby. Doris’ love for children had her babysitting for many families during her lifetime, both in St. Francis and Ellis.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon; son Gary Gordon Popp; her parents and fifteen siblings.

She is survived by her children, Ronald (Anita) Popp, Albany, OR, Carol Raile, Colby, Debra (Michael) Popp-Dipietro, Lansdale, PA and Susan (Gordon) Popp Noraine, Portland, OR; sister, Emma Nelson, Yuba City, CA; grandchildren, Andrew (Jaimie) Popp, Shaundra Popp, Michael (Donna) Raile and Jeffery (Desiree) Raile and ten great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter. Doris had many special angels in her life including Relda Galli and her special Sweet Pea, Cayla Carter.

Funeral Service is 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 24, 2017, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Colby. Graveside services will be 2:30 pm, Mountain Time at Mt Hope Cemetery, Imperial Nebraska.
