Obituary for William D. "Bill" McAvoy Sr.

William D. McAvoy, Sr.
Millinocket – (FLAG) William D. McAvoy, Sr. 83, died Friday, July 21, 2017 at a Millinocket hospital. He was born May 15, 1934 in Millinocket, the son of Halbert and Myrtle (MacDonald) Mcvoy.
Bill grew up in Millinocket, and was a graduate of Stearns High School. A Korean War Veteran, Bill served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Guyatt. After his service time, he worked for the Great Northern Paper Company in the Sulfite Department for many years, retiring in 1988. Bill spent many happy hours on his private island at South Twin Lake with his wife, Lurene Etta (Patchell) McAvoy, who predeceased him in 2009.
He is survived by a son, William D. “Danny” McAvoy, Jr.; a brother, Bob McAvoy; a brother in law, William Boyington; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his wife, Bill was predeceased by his sister, Barbara Boyington, and a sister in law, Anne Marie McAvoy.
Graveside services, with military honors, will be held 10 A.M. Friday, July 28 at the Millinocket Cemetery. Gifts in memory of Bill may be sent to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are by Lamson Funeral Home, Millinocket.
