Obituary for Gordon Vokey

Gordon Vokey
Gordon passed away in his sleep at Markham Stouffville Hospital on Friday August 11th. He was in his 98th year.

Survived by his wife of 68 years, Jean Vokey, father to Marylou Marshall, Norm Vokey and Elizabeth Atkinson. Grandfather to 6 grand children and 6 great grand children, Gordon will be sorely missed.

He was born in Montreal on December 13th, 1919 where he lived until 1970 when he moved to Toronto. Gordon served in the RCAF from November 1940 to December 1945 spending most of that time overseas having reached the rank of Flying Officer. Returning to Montreal in late 1945 he worked at the T. Eaton Company and Corbet & Christies before joining Dominion Rubber where he spent the rest of his working life until retiring in 1984.

Gordon met the love of his life Jean Clarke at a surprise birthday party for him on December 12, 1945. They were married on September 4, 1948 at St. Clements church in Verdun. Until Gordon was in his fifties, he thought his birthday was December 12th, not until he applied for a birth certificate did he find out he was born on Friday December 13, 1919. He proved that good things can happen on a Friday the 13th.

Over the years Gordon was very active in the Anglican church in various capacities in both St. Clements Anglican church in Verdun and St. Matthews the Apostle Oriole Anglican church in North York. He enjoyed his vegetable garden especially growing tomatoes, potatoes and swiss chard, working around the house and mostly his family.
He is dearly loved and will be missed forever.

Donations to St. Matthews the Apostle Oriole Anglican church at 80 George Henry Blvd., North York, ON, M2J 1E7 in lieu of flowers would be appreciated.
