AKWESASNE – Mrs. Clara Joan White, “Kaherentha”, 66, of 136 State Route 37, passed away Sunday evening, August 20, 2017 at Alice Hyde Medical Center, Malone.

Clara was born May 30, 1951 on Cornwall Island, the daughter of the late Louis and Eva Y. Jacobs Point. She attended schools on Cornwall Island and graduated from General Vanier. She later graduated from St. Lawrence College with the degree in Photography and Graphic Design. On May 13, 1989, she married her longtime sweetheart, Donald R. White at the Hogansburg Methodist Church with Rev. Laurie Smith, officiating.

Clara was the main illustrator for the Mohawk Language Curriculum with the Akwesasne Board of Education. She was also a Mohawk Language Teacher and an artist. She enjoyed sewing, doing beadwork, making traditional clothing, and going to Pow Wows.

She is survived by her loving husband, Donald; her son, DJ White of Akwesasne; her chosen daughters, Sheryl Thompson and Debbie Point, both of Akwesasne; a chosen godson, Melvin Thompson of Akwesasne; her grandchildren, Taylan and Kalea White; her sisters, Cecelia Point, Judy Swamp, and Charlotte Thompson, all of Akwesasne; and Pauline and John Oliver of London, Ontario; a chosen sister, Valerie Francis; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Madeline David, Florence David, Audrey Thompson, and Dinah Point; and four brothers, Percy Point and 3 in infancy.

Friends may call Wednesday and Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where funeral services will be held Friday 11:00 AM. Cremation will follow.
