Obituary for Gayle Hall Zavesky

Gayle Hall Zavesky
Gayle Hall Zavesky, 81, of Victoria, Texas, passed away on Monday, August 28, 2017, with her loving family by her side. Gayle was born in Richland Springs on July 2, 1936, to William Garland “Pete” and Greta Mae Hall. She grew up in Johnson City and graduated as valedictorian of Johnson City High School. After high school Gayle moved to San Marcos to attend Southwest Texas State Teachers College, and while there she met Robert Jerry Zavesky, whom she married on October 15, 1955.

After being blessed with three children and then earning a bachelor’s degree in education, Gayle taught government and civics at San Marcos High School. She and Jerry moved to Victoria in 1976, where she resumed teaching government and civics at Victoria High School for many years and briefly taught business courses at Victoria College. Upon retiring from teaching, Gayle continued to shape lives by tutoring young adults in obtaining their high school equivalency certificate. Fondly known as “Mrs. Z” to her students, Gayle encouraged and mentored countless teenagers in her 26-year teaching career.

Gayle was an avid reader, bridge player, and genealogist. She was active in her church by working in the church library and teaching Sunday school, she was a Beta member while living in San Marcos, and she was a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. Gayle loved to travel with Jerry in their RV after retirement, exploring and enjoying the scenery of many states and working in various state parks together. She especially loved the grandeur of the Grand Tetons, the beauty of sunflowers, and the smiles of her six grandchildren who affectionately call her “Gram.”

Gayle loved her Lord and she loved her family. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Jerry; son, Joey Zavesky and wife Suzanne of New Braunfels, Texas; daughter, Lorrie Lee and husband Marvin of Austin, Texas; son, Chuck Zavesky and wife Suzanne of Victoria, Texas; grandchildren, Taylor Zavesky and fiancé Stefan Schriewer of McQueeney, Texas; Amanda Ohrvall and husband Steven of Charleston, South Carolina; Travis and Logan Lee of Austin, Texas; Lawson and Hannah Zavesky of Victoria, Texas; brother, Dwight Hall and wife Norma of San Antonio, Texas; niece, Christie Nickell and husband Chad of San Antonio, Texas; nephew, Michael Hall and wife Rachel of Amarillo, Texas; and seven great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family would like to thank the nurses at Hermann Memorial-Texas Medical Center in Houston for their kind and gentle care of Gayle, especially with their limited staff during the hurricane. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Stroke Association at www.stroke.org, Parkway Church in Victoria, or any charity of choice.

After a private burial, the family will receive friends at Grace Funeral Home, 2401 Houston Highway, Victoria, Texas, 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Friday, September 8, 2017.
A Celebration of Life Service will immediately follow at Grace Funeral Home, 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Friday, September 8, 2017.
