Betty L. Byers, 89, formerly of Fayetteville, passed away on Friday, September 1, 2017, at Shook Home. Born April 29, 1928 in Greencastle, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Anna (Zimmerman) Kendle.

Betty was a graduate of Chambersburg High School. She was a licensed beautician and was employed as such for a number of years. She was later employed as an Activities Aid at South Mountain Restoration Center until her retirement. She was an active member of St. John’s United Church of Christ where she belonged to the women’s fellowship and the church choir. She quilted at her church and was a member of the Chambersburg Quilt Guild and the Business Professional Women’s Foundation. An active member of the Democratic Party, she served as Chair of the Democratic Women of Franklin County and attended one of the Democratic Conventions during one of President Clinton’s successful campaigns. Betty also served as a hospice volunteer. She enjoyed quilting, knitting, crocheting, counted cross stitch, arranging flowers, reading and was an excellent cook.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Rowe B. Byers, whom she married on September 11, 1949; three children, G. Brent Byers (Mary) of Baltimore, MD, Renee Byers (Rodney) of Chambersburg, and Brad K. Byers of Harrisburg; four grandchildren, Doug Byers of Levittown, Bridget Nadolny (Mike) of Baltimore, MD, Shannon Richard (Troy) of Lititz, and Amber Byers (Johnny) of Ypsilanti, MI; seven great-grandchildren; and her sister-in-law, Honoré Kendle. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Eric Rowe Byers in 1990 and her brother, Jack Kendle in 2015.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, September 10, 2017 at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 1811 Lincoln Way East, Chambersburg, PA 17202. Pastor Robert Macfarlane will officiate.
