Julia V. Bender, 94, a resident of Chambers Pointe, formerly of Shippensburg, departed this life on the afternoon of Wednesday, September 20, 2017.

Born on March 25, 1923, in Berkley Springs, WV, she was a daughter of the late Roy H. and Margaret Michael Unger. Julia married Earl C. Bender on October 20, 1939. He preceded her in death on March 18, 1972.

Julia was employed as a cook at the former Johnnie’s Restaurant, Newburg, for many years. She had also worked at Manor Care, Chambersburg and in the private health care services field.

In her free time Julia enjoyed cross-stitch and embroidery; reading, especially her Bible; and tending to her African violets. She was an excellent cook and was known for making marvelous pies. Julia was also known for writing letters and sending cards rather than making a phone call. She had wonderful handwriting and penmanship. Julia always enjoyed spending time with her family and enjoyed everyone’s company and visits.

She is survived by two sons, Harold E. “Sonny” Bender and wife Carol of Shippensburg and Roy David Bender and wife Connie of Newville; three daughters, Joan E. Carr and husband Donald of Greencastle, Doris K. Rosenberry and husband Joseph of Upper Strasburg, and Karen S. Gutshall and husband Paul Jr., of Shippensburg; fourteen grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren; and one great great grandson; one brother, Rodger Unger of Biglerville; one sister, Patricia McDannell of Gettysburg; two sister-in-law, Pauline Bender and husband Sam and Rose Bender and husband David; one brother-in-law, Harold M. Bender and wife Marie; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Julia was preceded in death by four brothers, John, Leroy, Jim, & Marshall and two sisters, Betty and Marie.

Her funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m., on Tuesday, September 26, 2017, at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc., Shippensburg. The Rev. John A. Ile, Jr., will officiate. Interment will follow in the Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg. Viewing will be two hours prior to the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.
