Condolences

Condolence From: Randy Bullock
Condolence: Don and I were the best of friends in High School. We drove to Wisconsin when we were both 15. Back then it was legal to drive with a learners permit if a licensed driver was in the car. Herb Hardesty went with us and Herb was 16! So we were legal. We had a lot of fun and a lot of laughs. Another time Herb was getting into a fight with another guy and in the process I got cut and Don drove me to the emergency room and I bled all over Don's car. Don was making jokes the whole way. He wanted me to maybe quit bleeding for awhile. :) Always dry humor and most didn't understand his humor. I went to the University of Illinois, Don became an air traffic controller and somehow we completely lost track of one another, but I have thought about him a lot. See you in the great beyond Don.

Condolence: I'm very sad to hear of my father's passing. He adopted me when I was six years old but pretty much raised me from when I can remember. He took time to teach me to love and respect nature and to try to leave a good impression on everyone you come on contact with. It broke my heart when he stopped talking to me when I was grown. I guess he might not have even told anyone that i existed but I did and I do. I wish I would have been notified of his passing but I guess I won't be recognized as his daughter even in his death. As much as it hurts me I still feel a debt of gratitude because of how he treated me when I was still a child. He did step up and serve as the only father I'd ever known until I turned 18. I am sad we will not have a reunion and even more sad that my relationship with my siblings had to end as well. Much love to you Dad. Thank you for being in my life and being a good example for me to follow. I'll never forget that time I got in trouble at school for hypnotizing my friends at school after you taught me how to do it. Maybe now I can be at peace with it all and I truly hope the same for you my father. Rest well.

Condolence: My sincere condolences to Don's family and friends. I worked with Don for the few years that he was a professor in the Psychology Department at Eastern Illinois University, where I've taught for the past 30 years. In addition to his "wildly inappropriate" sense of humor, I also appreciated his clear and direct communication style. Don didn't concern himself with being politically correct; he would always "tell it like it was."

I had not seen Don for over 20 years until I got a phone call from him out of the blue this past summer. He was passing through Charleston, IL on his way to Danville to visit family when he stopped to give me a call. After a brief lunch at the local county airport-his choice-we went back to my office to reminisce about "the old days" at EIU. We talked for a couple hours, during which we were joined by another of my former colleagues who had retired a few years ago.

It was fun reconnecting with Don after all those years, and it was gratifying to see that his sense of humor and political incorrectness were still intact. He was certainly one of a kind; may he rest in peace.

Condolence: Our condolences to your family. Don was a beloved teacher, mentor and supervisor. We have fond memories of attending the Donfire in the Land of Boz during our graduate training. Don's legacy will live on through the students he trained to help others in need. May he rest in peace.
