Obituary for James Doy Shinn

James Doy  Shinn
James Doy Shinn, 95, of Pocatalico, passed away on October 1, 2017. He was born in Young, Jackson County, West Virginia on March 12, 1922 to the late Lloyd Osborne and Ora Othel Wolfe Shinn. James was a World War II veteran serving from 1942-1945 as a Boatswain’s Mate First Class in the U.S. Navy. After being honorably discharged he worked for Union Carbide for thirty-nine years and retired in 1984. Prior to entering the Navy, he was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps and worked for United Fuel/Columbia Gas, Cabot Gas, Libby Owens Glass, and Dunbar Glass.
Doy, as he was known to friends, was the last remaining charter member and past president of the Sissonville Lion’s Club; charter member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church where he had served as an usher, trustee, chair of the Administrative Council, and charter member of United Methodist Men; coached little league softball for 11 years; was Sunday School Superintendent and Scoutmaster for Troop 59 Boys Scout of America at Bias Chapel Methodist Church.
He is survived by his children, James D. Shinn II (Brenda) of Sunapee, NH, Karen Shinn Wales of Huntsville, AL, Richard D. Shinn (Cathleen) of Midlothian, VA, Cheryl Shinn Rollins (Mark) of Charleston, WV; grandchildren Dr. Jennifer Pettyjohn (Clifton) of Georgetown, KY, Dr. Jessica Thomas (Timothy) of Clinton, NY, Andrea Wales of New York, NY, Erica Wales of Arlington, VA, Emily Robinson (John) of Harrisonburg, VA, and James R. Shinn of Minneapolis, MN; great grandsons John-Paul Robinson and William West Thomas; brothers Richard and Lloyd O. Shinn of Smyrna, TN and John Shinn of Jacksonville, FL.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, October 5, 2017 at Long & Fisher Funeral Home, Sissonville, with the Rev. Loretta D. Isaiah officiating. Burial will follow at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, October 4, 2017 at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Aldersgate United Methodist Church and the Sissonville Lions Club sight fund.
