Etta Elizabeth  Phillips (Mills)
Etta Elizabeth Mills Phillips, born September 11, 1919 in Newton, North Carolina to Dola Sipe and James Thomas Mills went to be with God and all those who have passed before on October 10, 2017 in her home. She was married for 46 years to Robert Woodrow Phillips, former postmaster in Hudson who died in 1984. She had three sons, Robert Woodrow Phillips, Jr of Sawmills, Richard Adrian Phillips of Jacksonville, Florida and Timothy Jon Phillips of the home.

Etta graduated from Appalachian 1939 and taught in the public schools of Caldwell County for 40 years. She was a member of St John's Lutheran Church of Hudson for over 30 years and Mt. Zion Baptist of Sawmills for over 50 years. While attending, she also taught the Adult and Primary Sunday School, was Vacation Bible School director numerous times, was active in Training Union, Women's Auxiliary, and in the choirs of both churches.

Community activities included volunteering with the Bloodmobile, Red Cross, Caldwell Memorial Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary where she also served as president for two of those years, and Caldwell County Hospice and Palliative Care for 20 years. She also served on the Caldwell County Library Board, Redwood Park Advisory Board, Blue Ridge Electric Advisory Board, and also served as Secretary for the Caldwell Retired School Personnel. She was a member of AARP and the Senior Citizens of Caldwell County, and competed many years in the Unifour Senior Games in which she was one of the first participants. In 1985, she received the Governor's Award and was elected Hudson' Woman of the Year. For over 40 years, she was a member of the Lenoir Golf Club and also served as president of the Ladies Golf Association, Foothills League of Women Golfers, and was a member of Senior Women of N.C.

She is survived by her three sons Robert Jr. of Sawmills, Richard and Virginia of Jacksonville Fla, and Tim of the home as well brother-in-law Leroy and Jeri Phillips of Manning, S.C., nephew Michael and Debbie Smith of Hudson, Thomas Smith of New Bern, and grandson Robert Woodrow Phillips III of Gamewell.

A private service will be at St. John's Lutheran Church, Hudson at 2:00 PM on Saturday, October 14, with Pastor Ann Kelly presiding. Music will be provided by Robert Smith and Tim Phillips. Receiving will be immediately following the service from 2:45-4:45 in the sanctuary.
