Condolences

Condolence From: Rick Nichols
Condolence: I met Mrs. Phillips at the Lenoir-Rhyne homecoming golf tournament in the late '90s. I had just started working at LR and was asked to fill in to complete a foursome in the tournament. Turns out I was paired with Mrs. Phillips and her son Richard, whom I didn't know. That was the beginning of a 4-year run for us in the tournament, and I thoroughly enjoyed each one. Mrs. Phillips, who was near 80 then, was an amazing physical specimen! She'd hit her shot, which normally was very solid, then literally run to the cart to put her club in the bag. I'll never forget that, and it's inspiring to this day. Eventually, I lost touch with Etta, but I've never forgotten her. Reading her tribute, it's very apparent that she had an incredible life. I'm so glad that I got to meet her and spend time with her, especially on the golf course, a place that meant a lot in both our lives. Rest in peace

Condolence From: Susan Douglas
Condolence: It's been a sad day today. My long time friend and neighbor, Etta Phillips, passed away this afternoon. She was 98. She taught my mother in the 2nd grade at Kings Creek. She taught my sister in the 6th grade at Hudson. She baked numerous pans of homemade biscuits for us when my mother passed away. She brought plates of food for us continuously. She saved my life in 2007 when my appendix blew out. Drove me to the emergency room and stayed with me till surgery. She took me back again after that in which I stayed for 11 more days. She was in her 80's then. She has always been like the duracell battery. Never quits. I have seen her mow the yard, plant flowers, turn the carport light on and paint the carport all in one day! There will never be anyone else like her!
