Obituary for Silvano "Sil" L. Buonanoma

Silvano "Sil" L. Buonanoma
It is with deep sadness the family of Silvano Buonanoma announces his passing on October 13, 2017.

Silvano (Sil) was born to Luigi and Niccola Buonanoma in Lammari, Italy August 8, 1922. He came to America at age seven. As his father worked for the railroad they lived across the state and finally making home in Hazen, Nevada. He attended Fallon High School. Even at a young age he was a hard worker, driving the school bus to and from Fallon and picking all the other kids up along the way. He also worked on the railroad.

Sil enlisted in the Army in 1942. He was transported to Europe on the Queen Mary, which was being used to transport troops because all the military ships were in use. There were so many men he had to sleep on the deck. He was a Tech Corporal in the 749th Tank Destroyer Regiment of the 29th Division that landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day. He was wounded in Sitturd, Holland in December of 1944, was patched up in the field hospital and sent into the Battle of the Bulge on Christmas Eve of that year.
Sil met his wife Elma in Fallon before he enlisted. After his service they married October 5, 1946 at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Reno. After living in San Francisco for some time they came back to Reno and raised a family. His hard work didn’t stop. He was employed at Sierra Pacific Power Co. working in the Engineering Department along with working nights at the Mapes Hotel doing the stage lighting for many years.

Sil never hesitated to do volunteer work through out the years as well and was very dedicated to serving at Little Flower Church. In 2008 he received the Diocesan Recognition Award. He and Elma also enjoyed square dancing and for several years chaired the Silver State Square Dance Festival. He loved to garden, cook great Italian meals and spending time outdoors, however his most important dedication and love was to Elma.

Sil was preceded in death by Elma (November 17, 2015), parents and brother Tito Buonanoma. He is survived by his son Dennis (Carol) Buonanoma,, daughter Lynne (Burnell) Poupeney, grandsons Justin Buonanoma (Mariah Gustin) and Jeffrey Buonanoma (Megan Stone) and great grandson Kai Buonanoma.

A loving soul, and will never be forgotten.
