Obituary for Luis Manuel Fonseca Freire

Luis Manuel Fonseca Freire
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and friend on October 23rd, 2017.
Luis was born in Coimbra, and raised in Cavadinha, Portugal. He was predeceased by his father, Jose De Oliveira Freire. Luis memory continues to live on in his wife of 25 years, Fernanda, his sons Ruben and Andre. Luis is survived by his sister, Paula, his nephew Ricardo, his mother, Julia who live in Portugal. In Winnipeg he is survived by his nieces, Sabrina and Catarina, and sister-in-law, Regina, his aunt, Olinda (Leonel) and their children/Luis’ cousins, Leo (Rebecca), Pedro (Catalina), Celia (Chris) and their respective families. In Portugal, Luis is survived by his aunt Fernanda (Antonio), his cousins Pedro (Elisabete) and Bruno and their respective families.

Luis immigrated to Canada when he was 17 and was welcomed into Olinda’s home as one of their own. He was proud to become Canadian. He worked in construction in his early years. He found the love of his life, Fernanda and they married in 1993. The following year they lived in Portugal and enjoyed the relaxed lifestyle as carefree newlyweds: traveling, sightseeing, enjoying the beaches, “festas”, socializing and precious time with family. They returned to Canada the following year, awaiting the arrival of Ruben. Luis worked for Maple Leaf construction for many years, while he cared for Ruben then Andre from November until May every year. He was hired as a custodian for Seven Oaks School Division first as an evening custodian at Edmond Partridge, followed by days briefly at James Nisbet, then at Maples Collegiate where he spent approximately the last ten years as a valued member of the school community loved by staff and students. He was an intelligent humble man who completed his High School requirements during his year in Portugal, followed by the GED diploma and Power Engineering certificate in Winnipeg.
Luis was a dedicated father and husband. His world revolved around nurturing his relationships with wife and his boys and providing for his family, cherishing activities and family time. He was always supportive of his one true love Fernanda in her studies, his son’s endeavors in competing in soccer nationally and internationally in the United States and Portugal. He valued hard work and dedication. He valued education and encouraged Ruben and Andre to focus on their own academic goals, and invest in their own future. He was proud that both children have either completed or are in process of completing university Bachelor Degrees in Nursing and Engineering, respectfully.
Luis was compassionate and beloved as people saw Luis as the genuine caring soft-spoken man who listened without judgment and whose twinkling eyes and smile thawed rivers, as he made connections with those who crossed his path. He was a gentle man; a man loved by all who knew him.
Luis was skilled in many areas and was excellent at problem solving. He enjoyed many diverse hobbies. He enjoyed playing soccer as well as visiting regularly his first home; Portugal. Prior to his passing he was able to visit Portugal one last time. Luis’ family would like to thank Maples Collegiate for their love and support as well as the Home Palliative Care Program and St. Boniface General Hospital Palliative Program for their caring and compassion.
Luis’ was authentic and knew what was most important; family and friends first. He leaves us a legacy; that of a compassionate humble quiet man who nurtured relationships and helped others tirelessly. Luis passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with an aggressive cancer that lasted mere weeks. Alas he is no longer in pain. We now pray together for his soul. He’s our star in heaven shining brightly alongside God.

Luis is forever... God bless ...

A private service will be held for family and friends.
