Obituary for Lalla Barron

Lalla  Barron
Lalla Farmer Barron, age 93 of Athens, Ga., died October 30, 2017. A native of Anderson, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Andrew Farmer and Lalla Marshall Farmer and the wife of Charles Edward Barron for 68 years. She graduated from Winthrop University, Rock Hill, South Carolina, in 1945, with a AB Degree in English and History and an Elementary Education Teachers’ Certificate. She studied on the graduate level at Emory University and The University of GA.
She taught four years in South Carolina public schools and two years as first grade teacher and supervisor at Winthrop College Training School. In 1949, She married Charles Edward Barron, a native of Atlanta, GA., who was employed as an accountant at Celenese Corporation in Rock Hill, SC., where they lived until 1955 when they moved to Athens, GA. She taught 7 years in private kindergarten. She has been actively involved in the First United Methodist Church serving as a Sunday School teacher, President of the United Methodist Women and member of the Pacesetters Sunday School Class. She was a member of the Junior League of Athens, Glenwood Garden Club, Salvation Army Auxiliary, and Athens International Council. She was president of the board of Hope Haven School in the early organizational years. She was also active with the Boy and Girl Scouts.

Genealogy was one of her hobbies. Lalla served as Regent of the Elijah Clarke Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution and as president of the Thomas Miller Chapter of the National Society of Colonial Dames XVII C.; she was a member of the GA Division of the National Society of Magna Charter and the Order of the Ancient Planters of Virginia.

She is preceded in death by her younger brothers, James Marshall Farmer of Greenville, SC, and Joseph Andrew Farmer of Anderson, SC and her son Joe Marshall Barron of Greenville, SC.

Survivors include her husband Charles Edward Barron of Athens, GA, daughter Dr. Ruth Barron Long and husband William Long of Franklin, TN, son Charles Edward Barron, Jr and wife Leslie Collins Barron of Athens, GA, and daughter-in-law Rebecca Robertson Barron of Greenville, SC. Grandchildren, Marshall Robertson Barron and wife Liza Marchant Barron of Greenville, SC, Jane Barron Hanisch and husband David Hanisch of Charlotte, NC., Laura Barron Elmer and husband Dr. David Elmer of Rome, GA, and Lalla Anne Tufts and husband Dr. Christopher Tufts of Nashville, TN., Barron Franklin Long, Hallie Elizabeth Long and Cynthia Louise Long of Franklin, TN. Three great grandchildren, Marshall Davis Barron and Elizabeth Chappell Barron of Greenville, SC, and James Elliot Elmer of Rome, GA.

The memorial service will in the First United Methodist Church at 2:00pm on November, 2, 2017. Family will receive friends immediately following in the Hancock Hall. In lieu of flowers a memorial gift may be sent to First United Methodist Church, 324 N. Lumpkin St. Athens, GA 30601 or Tamassee DAR School, PO Box 8 Tamassee, SC 29686.
