Testimonials

We stopped by the Rivermonte office last week and spoke with Robert to locate a couple of our familys gravesites. My mother was very impressed by his level of professionalism and compassion. In addition to giving us directions, he took the time to walk out to my fathers headstone to help us find it and took the time to clean it while we were there. This was a much better level of service than we have seen in the past.

Life Story for William Maxey

William Maxey
William Frank “Bill” Maxey was born in Muskogee, OK on April 18, 1919 to Robert Franklin and Lillie Elon Maxey. He departed this life on November 12, 2017 at the age of 98 ½ .

Bill was married to Irene Welch of Springfield, MO on May 11, 1944. Their family included Irene’s daughter, Shirley Kelly (deceased) and granddaughter Michelle (deceased), and grandson Charles Kelly. Bill and Irene lived happily together until her passing on July 1, 1993. Bill and Irene lived in a modest, immaculately kept home on East Wayland in Springfield. After Irene’s death Bill lived in their home until his 95th birthday; when he moved to Glendale Gardens Nursing Home to dwell for the final 3 ½ years of his life.

“Maxey” as he was known by his friends, served his country in the Arkansas National Guard prior to his apprenticeship as a machinist. He joined the United States Navy on May 16, 1946. After his discharge, he came back to Springfield to live with Irene and help his father-in-law with his open-air fruit and vegetable market. Not long after his return to Springfield, he hired onto the St. Louis San Francisco Railroad as a weight scale machinist. This adventure led him to many destinations across the Midwest and South. He took great pride and enjoyment in the work that he did until his retirement in June 1979. He enjoyed meeting his friends from the railroad monthly for cafeteria lunches in Springfield in the years after retirement. In retirement, he came to take up fishing on Bull Shoals Lake and Bull Creek, and tinkering with fixing lawnmowers for his neighbors. Bill could fix just about anything. He was a member of the Mission Hills Church of Christ. He was a good citizen, good neighbor and a good friend to so many. May he rest in peace till the Resurrection.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife Irene and two sisters, Marguerite Maxey Conley and Katherine Jane Maxey Turner. He is survived by his grandson Charles and nieces Sandy Moore, Carolyn Barnes, Patty Henderson and Kathy Slentz.

A Graveside service is scheduled for Friday November 17, 2017 at 10 a.m. at Springfield National Cemetery, 1702 E. Seminole St, Springfield, MO. Under the direction of Klingner-Cope Family Funeral Home at Rivermonte.
