Obituary for Esten Scott Kimbel

Frankfort – Dr. Esten Scott Kimbel, age 99, passed away Saturday, November 18, 2017 in Versailles. He was born in Louisville, on August 28, 1918 to the late Ellis and Hazel Martin Kimbel. In his earlier years, he served in the United States Army during the WWII Battle of The Bulge as a Battalion Surgeon of the 83rd Armored Division. Following his service, he returned home to Frankfort and opened his medical practice in 1947. He served as the Chief of Staff for the local hospital and was a board member during the conversion to the new hospital. He was also responsible for the first coronary care unit in Frankfort. In 1988, Dr. Kimbel retired from the medical profession. Upon retirement, he continued to work for the Kentucky State Department of Human Resources reviewing disability claims until he was the age of 90. Aside from his professional career, he was an avid birdwatcher, enjoyed gardening and spent many years on the Kentucky River with his house-boating friends.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Margaret Herrick Kimbel and by his daughter, Sharon Blazy.

He is survived by his wife, Moseill Kimbel; his sons, Scott Kimbel (Kathy) and Wayne Kimbel (Tish); grandsons, Eric Horstmeyer, Bradley Kimbel and Ronald Kimbel. He was also blessed with two great-grandchildren.

A private graveside service will be observed.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
