Obituary for Lela Elizabeth Schlemmer

Lela Elizabeth  Schlemmer
Mrs. Lela Elizabeth “Pete” Schlemmer, age 97, died peacefully on December 1, 2017 at Heritage Oaks Retirement Village in Corsicana, Texas.

She was born on April 3, 1920 in Mineola, Texas to Noel Hill and Ara Alice Hill. She married Alton E. Schlemmer in 1939; they were married for 58 years. She was an active member of Central Methodist Church. She worked at the Cotton Mill and retired from Adams Hat Factory. She was an avid 42-domino player, and enjoyed playing with family and friends. She also enjoyed Bingo and had a “green thumb”; she could grow anything and loved all kinds of flowers and plants. She was a devoted, wife, mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her siblings: Jewel Bodiford of Houston, Faye Joyce of Corsicana, Valarie Phillips of Livingston, Johnny Hill of Houston and Travis Hill of Louisiana.

Lela is survived by her son, Alton Gary Schlemmer of Corsicana; her daughter Melody Smith and husband, Paul of Corsicana; her granddaughter Hallie Caldwell and husband, Grant of Bedford, Texas; her grandson, Chase Smith of Pearland, Texas; great-granddaughter Lydia Caldwell; her sister, Marie Lancaster of Kerens, Texas and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation with the family will be on Monday, December 4, 2017 from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. at Corley Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at 10:00 A.M. at Corley Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Nancy Schluster officiating. A private burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park in Corsicana. All are welcome to join the family in celebrating Lela’s life.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association at 7272 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, Texas 75231 or the charitable organization of your choice. The family would like to thank the staff of Heritage Oaks Retirement Village for their dedicated service and care and give a special thank you to Dr. Kent Rogers.
