Obituary for
Eugene James Scray Jr.
Eugene James Scray Jr., 87, of Campton, New Hampshire, passed away on Sunday December 3, 2017, at home in Campton, New Hampshire with his loving wife, Patricia Webster Scray and his son at his side. Eugene was born in Jersey City, New Jersey on March 24, 1930, to Eugene and Anna (Baumeister) Scray. Eugene was raised and attended school in Bound Brook, New Jersey. From an early age, he had a keen interest in electronics, and is remembered for annoying the neighbors and entertaining the neighborhood children with his radio controlled model airplanes (now known as drones); his radio controlled boat was a big hit and everyone gleefully followed him down to the lake to witness its maiden voyage.
Eugene served in the United States Air Force for 4 years from 1950 to September 29, 1954 as a Staff Sargent. He attended Louisiana State University and earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Electrical Engineering.
A longtime resident of Burlington, Vermont, he was a top level engineer who lead significant accomplishments for IBM in Microchip Manufacturing being one of IBMs top engineers leading the establishment and construction of the IBM Burlington semiconductor manufacturing plant employing approximately 10K people and mentioned in the Guinness book of world records as the largest semiconductor manufacturing plant in the world back in the 70’s. Eugene later lead efforts in electro-beam lithography (writing 1 electron at a time) leading IBM across the 1 micron chip manufacturing goal line which at the time was considered very significant. Eugene is a multiple patent holder - both individually and for IBM. Eugene was also on the board of directors for WindTunnel Software - a leading software performance modeling company back in the 90’s. Upon retirement from IBM, Eugene spent time in the San Francisco bay area as a consultant in the area of electron beam lithography. He later moved to Ruston, Louisiana with his family where he formed and was very active in his church’s computer educational program.
Eugene was also the co-owner of ‘197 Pearl Street or known at the time as the ‘Outdoorsman’ - a business that sold snowmobiles, tractors, minibikes, dune buggies etc. back in the 1970’s. It was a fun place with lots going on.
Eugene was also a multi-talented highly skilled craftsman and dedicated many hours to teach all of his children the joy of building things and using tools. Throughout the years, he also enjoyed boating, fishing, camping, swimming with family, good food and his pet dogs.
He is survived by his wife Patricia Webster Scray, his daughter Anne (William) Parkinson of Hinesburg, Vermont, son Eugene(Albertine) Scray, III Leroy Illinois, and daughter Tamera Laskaris of Okemos, Michigan. He is also survived by his sisters Judith(Richard) Dilts, Nancy Dolgos, Jeannie(Jim) Delmar. Grandchildren include Jennifer Samson, William M, Michael, Peter, and Jessica Parkinson, Morgan, Jimmy, Elizabeth, Stephen, Lance, Zoe, and Alexander Scray, Gus, Sophia, Max, and Aleni Laskaris. Great grandchildren Joseph, Ana, and Julia Samson, William C Parkinson, and Charles Parkinson. He is predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Frances Ruth Henry Scray and his sister Bettyann Breen.
Interment will be at a later date in Arcadia Cemetery, Arcadia, Louisiana.
