The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Johannes Backus can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Obituary for Johannes Petrus Backus

Johannes Petrus Backus
Johannus Petrus Backus

John passed away on Dec 9th, 2017 at The Crossroads Inlet Center Hospice in the company of his caring granddaughter, Lisa. Survived by his wife of 62 years, Hilda, daughters Karyn (Brian), Mary (Bill) and son Paul (Susan), granddaughters Michelle (Robert, Xander & Rascie), Lisa (Michael) and grandsons Glen (Courtney & Brooklyn) and Todd (Claire).

John immigrated to Canada from Holland in 1953, following his two brothers. Starting work for Yetmans in Winnipeg, Manitoba, he eventually became self-employed by establishing the Backus Appliance Service. He moved with Hilda to Vancouver in 1981 and continued to operate his repair business. John was known to have “magic hands” when it came time to repairing any home appliance.

John and Hilda developed many lasting friendships within the Como Lake United Church over the past 30 years. A special group that was near and dear to his heart was the R.O.M.E.O.S which met every Wednesday for lunch. He will be missed by his family, many friends and associates.

A special thank you to the staff at Residences at Belvedere where John lived out his last years, as well as to The Crossroads Inlet Center Hospice for their compassionate care in his final days.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice.

A Celebration of Life service honouring John will be held at Como Lake United Church, 535 Marmont St., Coquitlam at 1:30pm, Saturday December 16th, 2017.
