Obituary for Evelyn Caroline Hamilton (Gumkowski)
Evelyn C. Hamilton, 92, a resident of Golden View Health Care Center, in Meredith, passed peacefully on December 12, 2017, surrounded by her loving family.
Evelyn was born on April 27, 1925 in Branford, CT., the daughter of Julius and Helen (Arkasky) Gumkowski. After serving as a nurse’s aide in the early 1940’s, she married the love of her life and Navy sailor (Oran) Dale Hamilton on August 3, 1946.
During their thirty years living in Guilford, CT., Evelyn assisted her next-door neighbor Anne Hull, in her home bakery business, on Boston St. After Dale retired from the Guilford Police Department, they moved to Greenwood, SC. Where they enjoyed a wide social network. Following her husband’s death in 1999, Evelyn returned to her hometown of Branford, CT., where she lived independently on Rose Street and Rice Terrace for twelve years, renewing many friendships and making new ones. In late 2011, she began her life in Meredith.
Evelyn was predeceased by her parents, her beloved husband, and three brothers, Stanley, Edward, and Frank Gumkowski, all of Connecticut.
Evelyn is survived by her children, daughter, Nancy Law of Meredith, her son Philip Hamilton of Brownsville, VT., her sister, Judith Limoncelli of Branford, CT., four grandchildren, Matthew Law of Texas, David Law of Pennsylvania, Jordan Hamilton and Kyle Washburn, both of Vermont, as well as great grandchildren, Josephine, Kaitlyn, Maxwell, and Ashley.
A Celebration of Life will be held in the Spring. Burial will be in the spring in the Brownsville Cemetery, in West Windsor, VT.
Memorial donations may be made to Meredith Altrusa, PO Box 760, Meredith, NH. 03253. This is a community service organization whose endeavors Evelyn supported throughout her recent years in New Hampshire.
