Graveside services for Jerry Don Wimberly, 55, of Texico, NM will be at 2:00 PM, Mon., Dec. 18, 2017 in the Portales Cemetery with Van McCormick officiating. Military honors will be rendered by VFW Post 9515. SSgt Tommy Wimberly, SFC Raymond Lopez, Jason Roberts, Shayne Naslund, Jarod Baldwin, Brent Strebeck, Jacob Bailey and Don Roberts will serve as pallbearers.
Jerry Don Wimberly was born Dec. 3, 1962 in Clovis, NM to the home of Gerald and Patsy Ruth (Fain) Wimberly, and died Dec. 12, 2017 in Texico, NM after a lengthy battle with cancer. Jerry grew up in Clovis, and was a 1982 graduate of Clovis High School where he was on the baseball team as shortstop, and was the quarterback and defensive corner in football. Following graduation he worked for a time at the Levi Straus plant in Clovis and later at Clovis Glass and Mirror. He attended ENMU where he studied Physical Education, but before he completed his degree he chose to enlist in the U. S. Marine Corps in 1986. Jerry served as an MP from 1986 until 1990. After his discharge, he was a Clovis Police Officer for ten years, and then was a Curry County Deputy for an additional three years. For a time he ran a sales and delivery route for Plains Vending, and then for seven years he worked at the Southwest Cheese plant. Jerry had been disabled since 2016.
Jerry enjoyed playing softball and playing horseshoes. While he was in the Marine Corps, Jerry was on the rodeo team, and was ranked 4th in the world in bull riding in the Military Rodeo Association. In his civilian life, Jerry coached a number of youth football, baseball and basketball teams. He was a member of the Eastside Church of Christ in Clovis.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Jasmine Wimberly of Jacksonville, NC; two daughters and a son-in-law, Jessica and Raymond Lopez of Kingsland, GA and Serenity Wimberly of Lubbock; two grandchildren, Ayla Lopez and Abel Lopez; his mother, Patsy Roberts of Texico; and a sister, Vickie (Don) Roberts of Texico and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Gerald L. Wimberly who died Feb. 11, 1997 and a great-nephew, Henry Isaiah Bailey.
