Condolence From: Robert Dod
Condolence: You opened my eyes to a whole new world. Being so compassionate and progressive in Polk County in the mid '60s helped me grow immeasurably. From seeing inter-racial marriage as normal to attending a Dylan and Baez concert to appreciating books that were not easy reads, but with an important message... Thank you!

Condolence: Arlie was, quite simply, one of the best teachers I ever had in my academic career, which includes to post-grad degrees. Dedicated, urbane, funny and with an intellectual depth rarely found in a high school faculty. He opened my eyes to a wider world and encouraged me to go explore it. My debt to him is profound.

Condolence: Sweet Memories, That's what You left us all with. Arlie you inspired us, sang with us, danced with us, celebrated with us, always made us feel loved, and left footprints on our hearts, and Polk County that will never fade. May You Soar with The Angels.

Condolence: Arlie was one of the most passionate and beautiful people I've ever been blessed to know. A love of history brought us together and our friendship grew into so much more. I lost track of Arlie, and was hoping to see him when I discovered he had passed on Christmas Day. The state of Oregon, Polk County, and the world has lost someone very special. My heart goes out to your loved ones. I love you so much. Thank you for making my life something more than it would have been without you.

He had many adventures and enjoyed sharihg his knowledge and experiences in an engaging manner. He generously gave of his time and skills to help anyone who wanted to learn about the past in this area and in the areas where he had traveled. Condolence: I only met Arlie half way through my Senior year in 1985, but he was a great influence in my life. He introduced me to classical music and a love for theatre. He took some of us to see Amadeus in the theatre and as a play at Mt Hood CC. Arlie was someone I will never forget. He will be missed, but forever loved.

Condolence: Dear Uncle Arlie,
I did not have the privilege of meeting you in person, but I came to know you through your brother, my dear friend Lew Holt. He spoke and wrote of you often. He shared pictures, which I treasure. Two in particular are telling: one of you and Lew, as little boys in overalls, each holding a little kitten; the other, taken on Patty's wedding day. Patty looks radiantly, peacefully beautiful, and you look elegant, dapper, and happy.
Thank you for making the world a better place. Thank you for being a wonderful son, brother, teacher, author, and friend.
Your star will shine forever, Uncle Arlie! Rest in peace.
Love, Meg and the kitties [Dolly, Hannah and Minnie]
