Obituary for Sarah Smelley

Sarah T. Smelley, age 74, of Moundville, Ala. died December 30, 2017, at Hospice of West Alabama. Services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 2, 2018, at New Hope Baptist Church in Hale County with Raymond Robertson and Ray Averette officiating. Burial followed in New Hope Cemetery with Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home South directing. Visitation was held at the church one hour prior to the Service.
She was preceded in death by her parents Mark Monroe and Sarah Pauline Tidmore and sister, Muriel T. Essary.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 54 years, Ludie Levern Smelley; sister, Ruth T. Whitley; brothers, Alvin M. Tidmore and Raymond M. Tidmore (Kathy); sister-in-law, Charlsey "Tot" Tubbs; and a host of nieces and nephews who adored their "Aunt Sarah'' and "Uncle Levern''.
Sarah was a graduate of Hale County High School and attended The University of Alabama. She worked for a number of years with the United States Post Office in Sawyerville, Ala., Alabama State Troopers Driver's License Division in Tuscaloosa and as resident manager for a local mini-storage service.
She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and strong supporter of her neighborhood church, China Grove United Methodist.
Pallbearers were nephews, Steve Smelley, Scott Tidmore, Allen Tubbs, Charlie Tubbs, Randall Tubbs, Terry Tubbs, Bill Whitley and Brian Whitley.
Honorary pallbearers were neighbors of China Grove community, friends of New Hope community, Hale County High Class of '61 and her longtime friend, Faye Whitfield of Winfield.
Sarah enjoyed watching Alabama football games, NASCAR races, traveling and spending time with nieces and nephews.
The family sends special thanks to the nurses, doctors, respiratory therapists, PCAs and staff on DCH 6th Floor South and to Hospice of West Alabama for their amazing and compassionate care of Sarah.
